چکیده

The startup and steady uniaxial elongational viscosity have been measured for two monodisperse polystyrene melts with molecular weights of 52 kg/mole and 103 kg/mole, and for three bidisperse polystyrene melts. The monodisperse melts show a maximum in the steady elongational viscosity vs. the elongational rate, ǫ̇, of about two times 3η0 whereas the bidisperse melts have a maximum of up to a factor of 7 times the Trouton limit of 3η0. The Wiest model which incorporates anisotropic drag and finite extensibility may be used to interpret the results in molecular terms.

Primitive chain network simulations for elongational viscosity of bidisperse polystyrene melts

Background Due to the industrial significance, elongational viscosity of polymeric liquids has been widely investigated. In particular, strain hardening, which is the deviation of the elongational viscosity from the linear viscoelastic envelope, has been of industrial and scientific interest because polymeric liquids exhibiting strain hardening are suitable for processing technologies with elon...

Prediction of multiple overshoots in shear stress during fast flows of bidisperse polymer melts

We present a differential constitutive model of stress relaxation in polydisperse linear polymer melts and solutions that contains contributions from reptation, contour-length fluctuations, and chain stretching. The predictions of the model during fast start-up and steady shear flows of polymer melts are in accord with experimental observations. Moreover, in accordance with reported experimenta...

Molecular dynamics simulation of planar elongational flow at constant pressure and constant temperature.

Molecular dynamics simulations of liquid systems under planar elongational flow have mainly been performed in the NVT ensemble. However, in most material processing techniques and common experimental settings, at least one surface of the fluid is kept in contact with the atmosphere, thus maintaining the sample in the NpT ensemble. For this reason, an implementation of the Nose-Hoover integral-f...

Nonlinear shear and elongational rheology of model polymer melts at low strain rates

We present new results for the low strain rate behavior of the steady-state planar shear and elongational viscometric functions of model polymer elts, computed by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The chain lengths in our model polymer melts vary from N = 2 up to = 100 beads, the maximum value corresponding to approximately 57 Kuhn lengths (approximately equivalent to polyethylene...

On the anomalous viscosity of monodisperse latex in the disordered state

2014 It is found that the viscosity of a monodisperse polystyrene latex in the disordered state increases anomalously when the disorder-order transition point is approached. This anomalous behaviour is analysed based on the Cohen-Turnbull theory of molecular diffusion in a liquid. J. Physique 41 (1980) 585-589 JUIN 1980, Classification Physics Abstracts 46.60 51.20
